Summary:
The primary objective of this course is to provide the student with the ability to define, understand and maintain a VSAM dataset.

Audience:
This course is intended for data processing personnel involved with the development and/or maintenance of systems using the Virtual Storage Access Method (VSAM).

Topics:

  • Properly defining a VSAM dataset by determining which options to select based on the projected usage and size of the dataset
  • Understanding buffer allocations and considerations for faster access to VSAM datasets
  • Understanding the usage, options, pros and cons of alternate indexes
  • Understanding the options for data placement and index positioning
  • Using the LISTCAT to monitor the performance of a VSAM dataset
  • Properly maintaining a VSAM dataset based on its historical usage and performance
  • Understand Control Intervals and Control Area, CIDF, RDF
  • Understand the 3 types of VSAM file KSDS, RRDS, ESDS
  • Understand insertions into a KSDS VSAM file, CI splits and CA splits

Prerequisites:
The student should have a basic knowledge of VSAM and some familiarity with access method services.
