Summary:
This course is a thorough introduction to programming with the Korn shell. The Korn shell is a powerful UNIX tool that has become the predominant shell in the UNIX world. The course includes extensive hands-on workshops.

Audience:
Software developers, power users, system administrators or those who want to increase their productivity in using, or administering their UNIX system or who want to take advantage of Korn shell features when developing software for UNIX systems.
Topics:
- Basics of writing shell programs
- Control flow within scripts (if-then-else, loops, case, etc.)
- Calculations within the shell
- Advanced command interaction techniques
- Input/output and the user interface
- Using more advanced UNIX commands (cut, paste, tr, etc.)
- Interaction with the UNIX operating environment
- Advanced use of the power utilities (sort, sed, grep and awk)
Prerequisites:
Students should have completed an introductory UNIX course or the equivalent experience. Prior experience with some programming language is helpful but not required.
